EUTFym Regional Event - Technical Visit to the construction sites of the Giovi Third Pass (Base Tunnel)

On March 10th and 11th 2023, the Young Members Group of the Italian Tunnelling Society (SIG) will host the Regional Event of the European Underground & Tunnel Forum (EUTF) YMs at the construction sites of the Giovi Third Pass (Base Tunnel).

For the first time since the birth of the EUTF, the event will take place in Italy, thanks to the commitment lavished by the SIG Young Members Group, with the aim of proudly displaying one of the most significant infrastructural works in Italy and to allow all young fellow European tunnellers to appreciate in person the best of the Italian art of Tunnelling, which has always been a flagship for our construction and design companies.

During the first day (March 10th) there will be a visit to the underground construction sites of the Giovi Third Pass, a new high-speed railway line (53km long, 36km of which in tunnels) which will allow an improvement to the connections of the Ligurian port system and the city of Genoa with the main railway lines of Northern Italy and with the rest of Europe for both freight and passenger trains.

The Valico tunnel (27km) will be the longest (#1) in Italy and the #11 in the world, and involves both conventional and TBM excavation (about 80km of total excavation) through a complex geology (high overburden and highlt tectonised ground conditions) with additional challenges such as presence of asbestos and explosive gas.

The second day (March 11th) all the participants are invited to take part in a guided tour of the historic center of Genoa and its most significant places as a further opportunity for networking.

The fee includes the trasportation from and to the construction site, the lunch, the apertif/dinner and the accommodation for the night between Friday 10th and Saturday 11th.
Travelling to and from Genoa is at the participants' expense.

Registration is open only to Young Members (under 35 y.o.). The program is attached.

The maximum number of participants is limited to 50: therefore, registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

The meeting point on March 10th is at 10:30 at the "Genova Piazza Principe" railway station, where there will be a shuttle bus to take us to the Genova Trasta construction site.
